Made at Lea Mills Since 1784
John Smedley has made fine knitwear since 1784, and Damiani Miami carries its knitted T-shirts. The company was founded that year at Lea Mills in Derbyshire, in England's Peak District, and the mill is recognized as the world's oldest continuously operating manufacturing factory.
In the 1800s John Smedley II made the name famous for fine merino underwear, and the company installed Britain's first fully fashioned knitting machines. In 1932 it introduced its Sea Island cotton polo shirt, which became a classic of British menswear.
The company is still family run, now in its eighth generation, and holds Royal Warrants. Every garment is still made in England, knitted, linked and pressed by craftspeople at Lea Mills, many of whom have worked there for decades.
