Borsalino has made hats in Alessandria, in northern Italy, since 1857, and Damiani Miami carries them. At 23, Giuseppe Borsalino opened his atelier there with his older brother Lazzaro, after learning the craft as an apprentice in Paris. The first Borsalino hat was made on April 4, 1857.
Around 1870 Giuseppe created a soft felt hat with a dented crown and pinched front, elegant and practical, that would change men's style in the 20th century. In 1900 Borsalino won the Grand Prix at the Paris Exposition, and from the 1930s Hollywood made its hats a symbol on screen.
The craft still takes time. A Borsalino felt hat takes about seven weeks, formed, shrunk and shaped by skilled hands, from the felt cone to the brim, the crown and the final trims.
